Hot Music vs. Try Hard Music

No one cares how talented you are.

All people care about is if your music moves them. In other words, all they care about is if your music is hot.

Too many talented musicians are coming at their music the wrong way. Their intention is to show off how talented they are. That comes across as trying too hard and that’s the formula for a cult following type of success. When you intention is to create something hot, you’re choosing the formula for a superstar type of success.

Don’t try too hard.

Do you realize that the most successful records are usually the simplest?

Why is that?

Is it because the populace is dumb?

Is it because everybody hates good music?

I don’t think so. It seems to me that it’s because the simple records do the best job at getting their point across.

When you listen to a simplistic record it is easy to catch on to what the song is about. Once you catch on you can vibe with the track, and once you’re vibing, you’ve made a connection.

How can I connect with you if I have no idea what you’re talking about?

The difference between a major success and a smaller success is simply that the major success has connected with more people. That’s it. So make sure people know what you’re trying to say and you’ll go a lot further.
