The more I live and grow in this business, the more I realize the importance of relationships.
You could be the most talented rapper to ever bless a mic but if no ones knows, you don’t have a career.
And usual the reason no one knows about you is because you haven’t cultivated relationships with people that can help you get it out.
Pretty much everybody this side of the moon says one of the keys to making it in the music biz is “Building Relationships”.
What does that mean though?
If that means I have to constantly put on a show and try to impress people, or I have to go out and act a certain way just so that people will like me, I’m not interested.
Luckily, I’m coming to find out that, that isn’t what building relationships is all about.
To me, it seems that building successful relationships is based off of being transparent with people.
More than likely, the initial reason you approach someone will be because you know they are involved in the business and you would like to build with them.
I think you should be upfront about this.
But after that initial conversation, the success of the relationship depends on whether the two of you actually get along.
This has nothing to do with music.
This is about being true to yourself, what you’re about, and where you want to go.
So my advice to you would be: Build with those people you really fuck with.
Be thankful for the like-minded individuals in your life, and contribute your best to the cause.
If everyone is playing the part they were meant to play, and doing it to the best of their ability, 1 + 1 = 3.
